The Intuit Small Business Blog regularly posts articles on a range of topics important to small business owners. From money, marketing and employment issues to current trends in local and nationwide small businesses, it can be a vital resource for both employers and employees looking to stay up to date on important issues and best practices.

Recently Intuit published a blog by writer Jean Dion entitled "Should You Sign a Non-Compete Agreement?" The article touches on a variety of issues central to freelancers' consideration of employment contracts and features quotes from Attorney Kevin Parks.

A non-compete clause is designed to protect the intellectual property and client connections that can keep a company in business. In most cases, non-compete clauses contain a specific set of restrictions. Some specify a time period after a contract ends in which a former employee or freelancer may not contact the company’s customers or engage in the same kind of work for a competitor. Many also outline geographic restrictions, ensuring that former partners or vendors won’t open up a business near the organization they’re working for.
